Introduction: Community pharmacies have
been recognized globally as playing a crucial role in providing primary and
reproductive healthcare services as they are well-positioned to provide
adolescents with various reproductive health services. Despite the potential
for community pharmacists to provide valuable services that promote
adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services (AFSRHS) within the
community, limited studies have been conducted in these regions to assess the
knowledge levels of community pharmacists regarding AFSRHS or explore their
attitudes and practices towards AFSRHS, and how community pharmacies are
equipped to provide AFSRHS. Methodology:
A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using a
self-administered electronic questionnaire to collect information on the
Knowledge, Attitude and Practices on adolescent friendly sexual and
reproductive health services among 192 community pharmacists across four
regions. The data was analysed using Stata version 16. Logistic regression was
performed to determine factors associated with community pharmacists’ practices
towards adolescent friendly sexual and reproductive health services. Results: Majority 138 (71.9%) of pharmacists in community practice had overall
inadequate knowledge on Adolescent Friendly Sexual Reproductory Health Services
(AFRHS), more than half had overall poor attitudes 102 (53.1%) towards AFRSHS
and similarly, more than half 105 (54.7%) had poor practices towards the
provision of AFSRHS. The results show
that attitude was significantly associated with practices of community
pharmacists towards AFSRHS. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest
significant gaps in knowledge levels, attitudes, and practices of community
pharmacists within these regions towards adolescent friendly sexual and
reproductive services. The findings also suggest gaps around how community
pharmacies conform to the WHO Global Standards for Quality Health-Care Services
for Adolescents. Interventions such as training and education is key to enhance
the technical competence of community pharmacists. Further studies are needed
to elicit more information on other areas of improvement to enable community
pharmacies conform to the WHO Global Standards for Quality Health-Care Services
for Adolescents.
